Понимать, схватывать. На первый взгляд, может быть, нет явной связи между текстильной индустрией и словом, обозначающим прояснение, ясное осознание чего-либо, но, как бы то ни было, глагол to cotton on произошёл от слова cotton — хлопок, хлопковая ткань. К XV в. слово cotton являлось глаголом и употреблялось в значении «взъерошить», имея в виду завершающий процесс выделки ворса на хлопковой материи. Два века спустя слово cotton приобрело значение «хорошо относиться к кому-либо», а к XIX в. оно использовалось в значении «симпатизировать кому-либо или чему-либо». Современное значение этого глагола — понять или принять какую-либо идею, может рассматриваться как продолжение значений его ранних вариантов.
